Summary
Ma'at is both goddess and abstract principle: cosmic balance, truth, and justice. Unlike moralistic judgment (punishment for sin), Ma'at is structural necessity. Violate Ma'at and the cosmos itself falters—the sun won't rise, the Nile won't flood. Her feather is the standard against which the deceased's heart is weighed. A heavy heart (weighed down by injustice) sinks; a light heart (balanced and truthful) ascends. Ma'at encodes the first ethical code: 42 negative confessions ("I have not stolen," "I have not lied") that define the righteous person. This is 2000 years before Kant's categorical imperative.
Symbolic reading
Ma'at = the load-bearing principle. Remove one brick and the whole structure collapses. She is not judge issuing verdicts; she is the law inscribed in the cosmos itself. The feather (very light) vs. heart (substance of deeds)—the imbalance measures your life's moral weight. Truth makes you light; deception makes you heavy. Linguistic root
Semitic etymology: m-ʿ-t from "maʿat" (to weigh/balance). The root itself encodes function: to measure is to know justice.

Open questions
- How does Ma'at enforcement work if no divine police officer implements verdict? (Answer: Violation of cosmic principle has automatic consequences—starvation, plague, social collapse)
- Why is the feather her symbol specifically? (Lightness = truth; heaviness = deception/burden)
